Take a Tour of Chef Jay's Home Beehives!

Thursday, June 20, 2019

Beekeeping is a pretty hot hobby right now and I thought some of you might be interested in it.  It was my first try at a video and it is unscripted so please bear with me. I will try to improve each month as what I would like to do is to make a video teaching you something culinary each month.  I have some good ideas I think, one of which is to show you how to pick out a good steak and how to recognize a bad one (we might even take a trip to Kroger for a look).

One thing I meant to discuss at the end of my bee video is the decline of the honey bee.  There are lots of theories but three facts are 1. small hive beetles which came from Africa; 2. Varroa mites (which are a BIG problem); and 3. invasive honeysuckle.  The problem with honeysuckle is the bees can’t use the flowers because they can’t reach the nectar down inside of them and it has completely taken over all of our fringe areas along roadsides and fields.  Many of you may recall how you could go pick blackberries anywhere down any country road around here.  Try to do that now - the honeysuckle has choked them as well as many of our other native flowers out.  Just look as you drive down the road!

It was also brought to my attention I should show how we get the honey out of the comb.  I will plan to do that in another video later this year.  I got two and a half gallons out of that box you will see me take off in the video.

I hope you enjoy it and don't worry, I will get better at the videos!

Chef Jay

Special thanks to Jay's son Ian for the video work!

Very cool, you look very calm with so many bees around you. Looking forward to some hot Nashville chicken with Bay's awesome honey!

I really enjoyed watching your bee video. Can you use any of it at the club like in muffins or salad dressing, or barbecue sauce? Just wondering!
